About Subletting Spaces

If you need to leave your rental before the lease is up, one of your options is to sublet the space. When you sublet, you remain responsible for all lease obligations, and collect rent from the new tenant. You, in turn, continue to pay rent to your landlord until the lease is up. You may also sublet your space if you expect to be gone for a significant period of time within the duration of the lease but would like to move back into your space before the lease is up.

Many lease agreements will specify terms on subletting, but more often it is between you and your landlord to come to an agreement. Because it is so common, many landlords will permit a responsible tenant to sublet their apartment.
